Calgary's coffee scene has been invigorated with the opening of Paradigm Spark, a specialty coffee roastery and café located at 422 11 Ave SE.

Founded by David Kim, an award-winning barista with a rich history in the city's coffee community, Paradigm Spark aims to be more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee.

Kim's journey began as a roaster at Phil & Sebastian, where he honed his skills over seven years before launching his own venture, David Kim Coffee.

Reflecting on his early days, Kim recalls, "They were very supportive, and they gave me a chance to experience the business and allowed me to do small projects from inside Phil & Sebastian."

Paradigm Spark offers a classic café menu featuring coffee and espresso drinks made with beans roasted on-site, complemented by sandwiches and house-made baked goods.

However, what sets it apart are the unique experiences designed to engage both coffee enthusiasts and professionals.

One standout feature is the Experience Bar, where patrons can enjoy high-quality specialty coffees brewed right before them by competition-trained baristas.

Kim emphasizes, "The specialty coffee service is not just serving good coffee—it's a more interactive experience between the barista and the customers."

This setup also provides a platform for baristas to practice their competition skills, even outside of formal training sessions.

Understanding the challenges faced by coffee professionals in hosting pop-ups, Kim has opened the Experience Bar to other baristas in the city for evening events.

"In my experience, making a pop-up as a coffee professional is really hard," Kim notes.

"And for those who are competing, the only time they can serve is once a year at competitions, and then there is no stage for them to practice."

The Experience Bar offers them that much-needed stage.

Another significant addition to Paradigm Spark is the presence of the Timberline Coffee School, founded by Trent Rollings, a World Coffee Championships representative and certified judge.

Collaborating with Rollings, Kim has created a space within Paradigm Spark that offers coffee education workshops for both professionals and enthusiasts, including Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) certified courses.

Previously, baristas seeking SCA certification had to travel to cities like Vancouver or Toronto for training, but now they can do it right here in Calgary.

Paradigm Spark also hosts food pop-ups, featuring delights like cream puffs by Saïd M’Dahoma and macarons by Colibri Cake Boutique.

These collaborations not only offer patrons a diverse culinary experience but also support local artisans.

Overall, Paradigm Spark is more than just a café; it's a space dedicated to advancing Calgary's coffee community.

Kim reflects, "I was lucky that I know industry people who were willing to share their spaces, so I know the value of that to young professionals."

"We're trying to share that idea in the same way so it spreads out to the next generation."

Paradigm Spark is open daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, inviting all to experience its unique offerings.
